Cubismo

Cubismo by Igor Penjivrag of http://www.colorlightstudio.com/ is a solid theme with a classic 2-column layout. The theme has a cool tabbed navigation bar and semi-grid structure. The theme’s background image is a cool checkered pattern from Squid Fingers, changing which will almost instantaneously yield a custom feel to your site. There are not many icons or images used in this theme making it a lightweight go anywhere theme, and since the layout is generic it will fit almost any site easily. This theme definitely reminds us of the good old days before the advent of Magazine Style Themes, this classic is sure to rock your boat.

Neoclassical

Neoclassical is Chris Pearson’s latest WordPress theme, Chris has dedicated his efforts towards promoting Open Education, which also appears to sport a similar if not the same design as this theme. As described by the author himself, this theme is more that just about looks, it is focused on clean design, optimization, accessibility, usability and solid code, and that is what you get when you use this theme. This 3-column, widget-ready WordPress theme is a good example of a 2-1-3 layout theme, i.e. the content (loads 1st) between the two sidebars (loads 2nd and 3rd respectively). It has a rotating header option and typography that makes this theme a treat in all screen resolutions, making it a perfectly good starting theme for an design project.

Xplosive Reloaded

This neat little theme by Jai Nischal Verma the new designer at “Blog oh Blog” has a classical 3 column fell but packs a lot of punch. As the name Xplosive Reloaded suggests, it is the advanced version of the Xplosive theme and has a built-in style switcher that allows the user (yes the user) change the feel of the theme. The background color and header/footer image options include Satin, Autumn, Aqua and Prairie, all of which are impressive and tasteful. The featured post is presented in full length while the rest of the posts are in boxes! The two right sidebars provide ample room for all your widget. Overall a very useful and well thought out design. Give it a try.

Upstart Blogger Modicus

Robert Ellis has done it again, a blog design that is far different from the bloggy look and yet so universally appealing. Upstart Blogger Modicus is a clean design and almost image free (with the exception of the header/thumb icon). The design includes a content section which almost looks and feels like the left sidebar at first look, but that is deliberate. The theme could be considered magazine style with less emphasis on the blog part of the site. Ideal if you are serving up a business or service online and blog occasionally, or you are plain simple experimental and like stuff that are unique, either way this is the theme for you!

Smashing Theme

Reviewing work by Design Disease is always a treat, the same holds for the latest work from this master designer. Smashing theme was created as a promotion to the already popular design site Smashing Magazine. This theme meets the highest standards of blog design both in terms of attention to detail and structure; the 3-column skeleton clubbed with superb styling makes it highly desirable! Both sidebars are widget ready, the content area is sufficiently large for reasonable size photos and videos, the sidebars provide ample room for the rest of your widgets. Overall, a perfect theme for any blog/site.

Gluttony

As a fan of tabbed navigation, I was elated when Small Potato released the Gluttony theme. This theme as simple as it looks, makes such a good starting template (or use it as is by just changing the header image- labeled banner.jpg in images folder) for all your design projects. Just to test how easy it was to move the sidebar from left to right, I simply cut and pasted the sidebar tag (get_sidebar) in index.php from above the loop to after in single.php and there it is, sidebar to the right. The CSS is well defined to address such customization. One thing to watch for is if you are not running 2.3.x and have no tags, the theme on activation will read an error. You can avoid it by adding a conditional if statement (function_exists) to avoid that block if the_tags are not active.

The Morning After

The Morning After by Arun Kale is an excellent grid based magazine style theme. The work is a piece of art and is probably one of the easiest themes to set up. It works practically out-of-the-box with just the addition of 2 categories, “Asides” and “Featured”, but there is room for plenty more tweaks and customization. This is one of the most popular new magazine styled themes and as described on a designer’s review, sets a new bar for all themes to come. The theme is not widget ready, but works well as is.

Diurnal

Elegant Blue by Nathan Rice is a clean 3-column design that offers one primary content area with 2 full posts (the rest as headings) and two widget ready sidebars. The subtle design makes this theme generic enough to be used on any sites, large or small. The creative use of the search feature and tabbed menu makes this design very professional and ready for customization.
